Arthur Beetson Memorial Statue - Unveiled 2012

Creating the Arthur Beetson Memorial Statue was a profound honour and the beginning of my journey sculpting Queensland’s rugby league legends. Arthur ‘Artie’ Beetson wasn’t just a powerhouse on the field—he was a cultural icon and the first Indigenous Australian to captain a national team in any sport. This statue at Suncorp Stadium commemorates not only his remarkable sporting achievements, but also his legacy as a trailblazer and leader.

Project Overview

The Legacy of a Rugby League Pioneer in Bronze

Arthur Henry “Artie” Beetson OAM (1945–2011) was a towering figure in Australian rugby league. As a prop forward, he represented Queensland and Australia from 1964 to 1981, gaining a reputation as one of the greatest post-war forwards in the game’s history. Beetson’s impact extended well beyond the field—his appointment as the first Indigenous captain of any Australian national team marked a significant moment in sports history and paved the way for future generations of Indigenous athletes.

The statue, unveiled in 2012, holds pride of place at Suncorp Stadium. It was an emotional day for fans and the wider community, many of whom travelled from across the country to honour Beetson’s memory. Media coverage, former teammates, and passionate supporters came together to celebrate not only his victories, but his role in shaping the cultural landscape of Australian sport. His leadership in the first-ever State of Origin match in 1980, where he led Queensland to victory, remains a defining moment.

This commission was the first of several statues I created for Suncorp Stadium, each one paying tribute to the spirit of Australian rugby. The Arthur Beetson Memorial Statue laid the foundation for later works celebrating Mal Meninga, Alfie Langer, and John Eales. Together, these sculptures form a visual legacy of Queensland’s rich sporting heritage and continue to inspire new generations.
