The Process
How a Custom Bronze Sculpture Comes to Life
01. Concept & Consultation
Every sculpture begins with a conversation. Liam works closely with each client to understand the story behind the commission—whether it’s capturing a legacy, honouring a public figure, or celebrating a moment in time.
From initial sketches to discussions around pose, expression and symbolism, this step ensures the vision is aligned before sculpting begins.
02. Clay Sculpting
Using traditional techniques, Liam sculpts the form by hand, starting with a welded steel armature that represents the subject’s skeletal structure. Clay is then carefully applied and shaped using hands, tools, brushes and sponges.
It’s a meticulous, hands-on process where the likeness, posture, and fine details come to life through hours of observation, refining, and adjustment—often with the subject visiting for review and feedback.
03. Mould-Making
Once the clay sculpture is complete, a detailed mould is created using layers of silicone and fibreglass. This mould captures every fine detail and becomes the master form for casting.
The original clay is then discarded, and a wax version is produced for further inspection and refinement. This step is crucial to ensure the final bronze is an exact replica of the artist’s vision.
04. Bronze Casting
Using the lost wax method, the wax copy is coated in ceramic and kiln-fired, allowing the wax to melt away. Molten bronze, heated to around 1300°C, is then poured into the ceramic shell. Once cooled, the shell is broken away to reveal the bronze form.
The sculpture is then assembled, chased (refined and polished), and finished with a patina—a chemical treatment that gives the piece its final colour and depth. A protective wax coat is applied to seal the work and give it a lasting sheen.
