Indigenous Anzac Memorial

This bespoke bronze memorial is the first of its kind in Queensland to honour the military service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women. Located in Brisbane’s Anzac Square, the memorial fills a long-standing gap in national recognition, offering a space for reflection, truth-telling, and cultural respect. It intentionally moves away from depictions of warfare, instead celebrating strength, identity, and enduring connection to Country.

Project Overview

Honouring Indigenous Service Through Sculpture

At the centre of the installation are six life-size bronze figures, each sculpted from clay before being cast in bronze. These figures do not represent individuals, but rather embody the collective spirit and contribution of Indigenous Australians across generations. Every pose, expression, and gesture has been carefully crafted to communicate emotion, story, and shared human experience — inviting all viewers to engage, remember, and honour.

A key feature is the Journey Stone, developed in collaboration with Indigenous artist John Gumbula. Its hand-drawn engravings, digitally transformed into 3D, symbolise cultural knowledge, the connection between land and people, and the wartime journeys undertaken by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service personnel. It anchors the sculpture in cultural truth, deepening its meaning and significance.

Commissioned by Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government, this bespoke bronze sculpture is more than a memorial — it is a statement of inclusion, resilience, and recognition. Created with traditional methods, extensive research, and cultural consultation, it stands as a proud and permanent tribute to a vital chapter of Australian history too often left untold.
